Edwin Coates Foundation

Edwin Coates When Mandy set up Town and Country Care, she was inspired by her father-in-law Eddie who she became very close to. Eddie lived in Whitby for most of his life, he worked as a joiner apprentice after leaving school, before joining the Army, where he was a driving instructor. Eddie later joined James Petre’s industrial roofing firm, where he worked and became a manager, and worked alongside his son Paul, Mandy’s husband, until he retired in 1993. Eddie was a member of the Free Masons and became Grandmaster which he was very proud of. His interests also included breeding rabbits, which explains the charity logo. This was a big part of his life, he showed and bred rabbits, mainly the black and blue Dutch breed. This was one of his main hobbies for around 40 years, and in the 1960s he became one of the founder members of the Sleights and District Small Livestock Society. Sadly Eddie became ill in 1994, and it was in this period where Mandy grew closer to Eddie, supporting him with his family through difficult times. It was always Eddies wish to remain at home with his friends and family, however as his condition deteriorated he had to go into a Nursing Home. This inspired Mandy to research Home Care and Home Support to help people remain in their homes for longer. Sadly Eddie past away on 7th September 2002, Mandy set up the Edwin Coates Foundation in his memory. The aim of the charity is to assist the local care community, with funds raised and donations. The charity is run by a committee of local people with in-depth backgrounds in the care sector. The funds raised will be channelled into equipment, days out, day care and other projects that will benefit the local community.
